Restarting the Router and Modem

Restarting your router and modem is often the first and most effective troubleshooting step for resolving slow or unstable internet connections across multiple devices. This simple restart often resolves temporary network issues and refreshes the connection to your ISP, improving both speed and reliability.

Instructions:

1. Unplug the Router and Modem

  • Locate the power cables for both your router and modem (these are usually small black boxes connected to your internet line).
  • Unplug the power cables from both devices. This will completely turn off the router and modem.

2. Wait for 30 Seconds

  • After unplugging, wait for 30 seconds to ensure both devices fully power down. This helps clear their memory and reset the internal systems.

3. Plug the Modem Back In

  • After 30 seconds, plug the modem back in first.
  • Wait until all the lights on the modem stabilize. This can take another 1-2 minutes as the modem reconnects to your internet service provider (ISP).

4. Plug the Router Back In

  • Once the modem is fully powered on, plug the router back in.
  • Wait for the router’s lights to stabilize, which may take another 1-2 minutes. The router should now reconnect and distribute the internet connection across your devices.

5. Test the Internet Connection

  • Once both devices are powered on and stable, test the internet connection on your computer, smartphone, or any other devices that connect to the network.
  • Check if the connection is faster and more stable.

Note: If the issue persists after restarting, reach out to HGC's IT department or contact your internet service provider (ISP) for further assistance.
