Step-by-Step Troubleshooting Guide:

 

1. Check Physical Connections

  • External Speakers: Ensure the speakers are properly connected to the correct audio port on the computer. If using wired speakers, check that they are plugged into the headphone or speaker jack (usually green).

  • Headphones: If you are using headphones, make sure they are fully plugged into the headphone jack.

  • Bluetooth Speakers/Headphones: If using Bluetooth, confirm that the speakers or headphones are paired with the computer. Check in the Bluetooth settings for active connections.

 

 

2. Verify Volume Settings

  • System Volume: Click on the sound icon in the taskbar and ensure that the system volume is turned up and not muted.

  • Application Volume: Some applications (e.g., media players, browsers) have their own volume controls. Make sure the volume is turned up within the app itself.

  • Audio Output Device: Right-click the sound icon and select Open Sound settings. Under the Output section, confirm that the correct output device (speakers or headphones) is selected. If you are unsure, switch between available output devices and test the sound.

 

 

3. Run Windows Troubleshooter

  • Navigate to Settings > System > Sound > Troubleshoot.

  • Select the device that’s causing issues and run the built-in troubleshooter to detect and automatically fix audio problems.

 

4. Update Audio Drivers 

Outdated or corrupted drivers may prevent sound from functioning properly. Follow these steps (You will likely need an IT admin to complete this step):

  • Press Windows Key + X, then choose Device Manager.

  • Expand Sound, video, and game controllers.

  • Right-click on your audio device (e.g., Realtek High Definition Audio) and select Update driver.

  • Choose Search automatically for updated driver software. If a new driver is found, follow the instructions to install it, then restart your computer.

 

 

5. Check Audio Enhancements

Sometimes, audio enhancements can interfere with sound output.

  • Right-click on the sound icon in the taskbar, select Sounds, and go to the Playback tab.

  • Select your audio device, click Properties, and navigate to the Enhancements tab.

  • Check the box next to Disable all enhancements, then click Apply and OK. Test the sound again.

 

 

6. Restart Audio Services

  • Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog box.

  • Type services.msc and press Enter.

  • In the Services window, locate Windows Audio, right-click it, and select Restart.
     

 

7. Test with Different Audio Sources

  • Play audio from multiple sources, such as a media player, browser, or system sounds. This will help determine if the issue is application-specific.

  • If audio plays from one source but not another, check the specific application’s audio settings or reinstall the software.
